The Kerlan Collection at the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities not only houses an entire warehouse of books and pre-publication materials, but it also serves as a social hub for folks in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area who like to stay informed about books for young readers and the people who write them. The Kerlan Collection hosts the Chase lecture each spring, and a lecture each fall in conjunction with the College of Education & Human Development’s Book Week, in addition to other informal gatherings throughout the year.
Of particular note in the Collection are papers from well-loved authors Naomi Shihab Nye, Russell Freedman, Walter Dean Myers, Nikki Grimes, and Andrea Davis Pinkney. Patrons may also make use of digital portfolios of Kerlan materials, which contain teaching ideas for educators.
